Frequently Asked Questions
How do you control the way
the bowl turns?
If you look carefully at a bowl, you
will notice that on either side there is a circle. Bowls have a
weighted offset to make the bowl curve (the bias). The bias side
of the bowl is noted by the smaller circle. Therefore, for a right-hander,
to play a bowl down the forehand you would have the smaller circle
on the left. To bowl on the backhand the smaller circle needs to
be on the right. A simple way to ensure you are bowling with the
correct bias is for the smaller circle to always be facing the
imaginary line down the middle of a rink.
How do you score a game of
Lawn Bowls?
At the conclusion of an end, the two
opposing captains meet at Jack (white bowl) end of the rink and
determine which team’s bowl is closer to the Jack. Sometimes
it’s difficult to determine this with the naked eye and a
measuring tape is used. If one team has two of their bowls closer
than the opposing team, they are awarded two shots. Three bowls
closer, three shots, etc.
Do I need special footwear?
No. Players are allowed to wear their
own shoes, as long as they have flat soles. In the summer, it is
always fun to bowl barefoot.
Are kids allowed to bowl?
Most definitely!!! We are equipped
with smaller sized bowls so that younger players can get out on
the green and enjoy the sport of Lawn Bowls. There is no minimum
age, but it is recommended that children under the age of 12 are
supervised by a parent.
Are Ready, Set, Bowl events
limited to daytime?
Most venues have suitable lighting
to allow your event to continue under lights. When you speak to
your RSB coordinator, they will gladly advise you of all the facilities
available at the venue you have selected.
How long does a Ready, Set,
Bowl event go for?
A typical event lasts between 3 and
3 1/2 hours. This includes a meal, the competition and awards ceremony.
Your RSB coordinator will prepare a "running sheet" of
your event in conjunction with your requirements.
